Kuleana is a Hawaiian value and practice which means “one’s personal sense of responsibility.” The word kuleana refers to a reciprocal relationship between a person and the thing to which they are responsible. Hawaiians have a kuleana to the environment, to care for it and to respect it, and in return, earth has a kuleana to give us life, to feed, shelter and clothe us. It is through this relationship that some Hawaiians say we maintain a balance within humankind and our natural environment.
