Does sea level rise have to lead to disastrous floods every year? Not according to the Netherlands. A quarter of the country is below sea level, but they’re not worried about it. They’ve become world leaders in adapting to the rising waters. Their secret: Work with the water, not against it. They’ve deepened river beds, created whole floating neighborhoods, and built parks that people can hang out in when it’s dry, but that double as reservoirs during floods, which keeps water from filling the streets.
